‘I have done nothing dishonest ever'
So said Lord Hanningfield on Thursday following his appearance at the dock on charges of fraudulently claiming expenses.
Far be it from me to prejudge the outcome of the case that the CPS has brought against him. We trust the evidence will be carefully considered and his guilt or innocence established.
That said the pig farmer is most assuredly guilty of one massive porky in this most striking claim. Is he really suggesting - more disturbingly does he really believe - that he has never, ever been guilty of dishonesty. Please!
Perhaps few would be quite so delusional in their self assessment but most of us are guilty of seeing ourselves with rose tinted spectacles.
What is the reality? We are all sinners whose default setting is set at ‘dishonest'. We massage the truth, we dissemble expertly, we seek to create an impression that flatters us and misleads others. The root of our problem is a heart that is - in the words of the prophet Jeremiah - ‘deceitful above all things'.
What we need is a new heart. Let us pray urgently with the psalmist; ‘Create in me a pure heart, O God'.

Tea and Coffee: Tea, coffee and biscuits are served downstairs in the hall after the morning and evening services. Everyone is very welcome to come downstairs and join us for this.
Communion arrangements: The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper will be observed during the evening service today. The attention of communicants is drawn to the following modification in our procedure. In order to meet the needs of those who may have scruples regarding the use of a common cup, a tray of disposable individual receptacles will now follow the communion cup for the benefit of any whose preference it is to partake in this form. Please note that as the trays provided will not balance on the pew book-board, it will be necessary for communicants to pass the tray along the pew holding the tray by the handle.
YF meets after the evening service in the hall. The congregation are
warmly invited to attend the first fifteen minutes where Rob Macdonald
will be talking about the work of Eastern Europe for Christ.
Ladies Book Group: Meets at Cathy's on Monday 15th at 7:30pm
Senior Citizens Lunch: This Thursday (18th) at 12:30pm in the small hall. All welcome

Conferences: David will be participating as the delegate of the International Missions Board at the European Conference of Reformed Churches in Edinburgh this week and, at the weekend and joined by Martha, as house parents at the Youth Conference. We are grateful to Prof. John Mackintosh who will be conducting the services next Sunday.
Spring Conference: This year's annual Free Church Spring Conference will be held from 9th to 11th April at the Aviemore Inn. This year we are delighted to have Prof John L. MacKay and Rev. David MacPherson as our speakers. David and Martha MacPherson will also be leading the Missionary focus. A conference like this gives us the chance to meet people from churches all over the country - not necessarily "Free" - while enjoying times of praise and discussions as well as our main speakers. It is also an ideal opportunity for those who are perhaps getting a bit old for the Youth Conference to move on - come and give us your support!
The hotel usually gives us our own area of the dining room and a meeting room to hold the talks in; and there is plenty of time for fellowship over tea and coffee in comfortable surroundings. Saturday afternoon is always kept free so you can enjoy the Resort's facilities or visit the surrounding area.
The cost of the Conference includes full board - you won't even have to pay for a cup of tea or coffee - and full use of the Resort's Leisure facilities.
An advert and booking form for the conference was in the January Record and will also be in the February edition.
