The Scottish Reformation 1560-2010
John KnoxMost  of  us  recently  heard  our  minister’s  sermon  on  Jude  verse  3.  We  were  reminded  of  our  duty  as  Christians  to  “earnestly  contend  for  the  faith  once  delivered  to  the  saints”.  David  referred  to the  450th  Anniversary  of  the  Scottish  Reformation  and  how  the  general  public  has  all  but  forgotten  the  significance  of  that  event.  Next  month  Pope  Benedict  XVI  is  to  make  a  State  Visit  to  the  United  Kingdom  which  will  include  a  huge  open  air  Mass  on  Glasgow  Green.
The  Scottish  Reformation  Society  exists  to  uphold  the  Biblical  teachings  of  the  Reformation,  which  was  instrumental  in  delivering  Scotland  from  the  false  and  soul  destroying  doctrines  of  the  Roman  Catholic  Church  and  its religion  of  works.  The  teachings  of  that  church  are  unchanged  but  nowadays  are  largely  unchallenged  by  most  Protestant  churches.  The  present  chairman  of  the  SRS  is  Rev.  Andrew  Coghill (Leurbost  Church  of  Scotland)  and  the  magazine  editor  Rev.  Douglas  Somerset (Free  Presbyterian  Church  of  Scotland,  Aberdeen).
Each  year,  under  the  auspices  of  the  SRS,  a  series  of  talks  on  different  doctrines  or  personalities  of  the  Reformed  Faith  are  held  over  the  winter  months  in  Aberdeen  as  well  as in  Inverness,  Edinburgh  and  Stornoway.  The  Society  also  publishes  a  twice  yearly  magazine,  The  Bulwark.  This  autumn, it  is  hoped  to  produce  the  first  issue  of  The  SRS  Historical  Journal,  which  will  publish  original  articles  on  the  history  of  the  Scottish  Church.
Our  hope  is  that  the  450th  Anniversary  of  the  Reformation  will  encourage  many  to  discover  more  about  the  struggle  to  establish  the  doctrines  of  Grace  in  Scotland  and  the  lives  of  the  many  godly  men  and  women  who  have,  down  the  years,  upheld  the  Reformed  Faith.  We  would  encourage  everyone  to  come  along  to  some   of  the  meetings  which  will  be   intimated  later.

Missionary Meetings this month
‘The Lord has done this and it is wonderful in our eyes’

September provides us with two exciting opportunities to hear of the Lord’s work around the globe:

  • MarsaliWednesday 15th September @ 7:30pm– Marsali Cambell & Maureen Kitiibwa will share with us about the work of Dwelling Places in Kampala, Uganda.Dwelling Places  is a Christian, non-governmental organization dedicated to removing children from the streets, rebuilding broken families and restoring broken individuals with the love of Jesus Christ. Their vision is "A society where every child has a chest to rest his head and a place to call home". This will be an inspiring evening.
  • Wednesday 22nd September @ 7:30pm – Ernest Brown will tell us about the progress of the Free Church in Central India. There has been exciting and unprecedented growth in recent years and this has created the need for the provision of ‘prayer rooms’ (essentially small meeting rooms) in several villages. The 2010 project of the Southern Missionary Support Group is to raise funds to help in the construction of the ‘prayer rooms’.

Collections will be taken at both meetings. Come prepared and give generously. For those who are not able to attend the meetings contributions can be made in a suitably marked envelope and left in the collection plate on any Sunday in September.

ABM Report

The ABM of the congregation took place on Wednesday the 25th of August.

The meeting began with worship and a brief meditation on Psalm 115:12. In this verse the psalmist is grateful for God’s help in the past but also indicates his confidence concerning blessing to come. Such an attitude would seem very appropriate for us as a congregation in the light of the many blessings we have enjoyed and our assurance that there is yet much more to come from God’s generous hand.

The treasurers - Christine Couper and Alistair Mather – presented a full and clear report on the accounts of the congregation. It was encouraging to note that the income of the congregation and our remittances to central funds (to support the wider work of the church) had increased in 2009. We are very grateful for the dedicated and efficient work of our treasurers.
The Treasurer’s report was duly approved by those present.

There followed an informative and entertaining report on the work of the Deacon’s Court by the clerk, Michael Mackenzie, which took us month by month through 2009 and highlighted different tasks undertaken by the Deacon’s Court.

The meeting then heard an encouraging account from Jonathan Worthington of both work that has been done and future plans in the area of teens and youth work.
Dr. Ian MacDonald, Session Clerk, updated those present on matters relating to the Kirk Session. In the year under review nine persons had been added to the Communion Roll on profession of faith and five by certificate, while there had also been eleven deletions from the Roll, giving a net total of 137 members at year-end.  There were four infant baptisms.

Dr. MacDonald made suitable and grateful reference to the work of Mr. Mike Bowman as superintendent of the Sunday School and his words were immediately followed by a presentation to Mike & Fiona on behalf of the congregation that consisted in a painting of a Fraserburgh harbour scene.
The meeting closed with brief final words by the minister.

While not wishing to cast even a small shadow over what was a very helpful and informative meeting it is a source of mild disappointment the very modest attendance that meetings of this nature seem to generate.
‘The LORD hath been mindful of us: he will bless us...’ Psalm 115:12

Prayer Triplets sign up

You can now sign up online for taking part in a prayer triplet this year.

There is no set format for the groups, the just take on the role that most suits the individuals involved.

If you are a student and want to sign up or renew your group please click here.

If you are not a student but want to be linked to a pair of students click here.

Any questions about the signup or the scheme in gerneral should be sent to the YF committee at yfmail
